In 1996 the Carlsberg Foundation awarded Lars Thomsen a two-year post-doctoral stay at McMaster University for investigation of the origin of the pacemaker signal in the gastrointestinal system. A hypothesis has been formulated by anatomical studies by Dr. Lars Thuneberg who by electron microscopy had evidence for a tight interaction between smooth muscle cells and enteric neurons where the interstitial cells of Cajal appeared to intercalated in the communication. In the winter of 1994 Lars Thomsen had discussions about EM pictures of Dr. Lars Thuneberg and possible electrical contact between the cells.
