We have an active program in South East Asia for the sampling of bioactive compounds from the rainforest. The picture below shows Professor Soeren Rosendahl Biological Institute, Copenhagen University participating in the training of the company’s bio sampling staff.
Prof Soeren Rosendahls expertice covers community ecology, population genetics and evolution of fungi with emphasis on biotrophic symbionts and parasites. Development of molecular markers to study diversity, population genetic structure and reproductive mode of soil and plant associated fungi including Fusarium, Penicillium, various Oomycota (Peronosporamycota) as well as the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in Glomales and fungi associated with insects. The latter is a yet undiscovered chapter in the rain forest of South East Asia where only a fraction of symbiotic relationships between plants – fungi and insects have been documented.
Ants and fungi accounts for 95% of the decompositon in the rain forest which underlines the biological dynamics of these ecosystems and point where to search for novel compounds. The biodiversity wealth in 1 square kilometer is large than the entire biodiversity in Europe – and each square kilometers are not equal to each other – there is great regional differences.
Our sampling team is trained in finding novel species of fungi, ants, spiders, wasps, leaches, etc and small plants and performing a range of optimal extractions for different classes of chemicals. Raw extracts are available for licensing. An agreement exists with the State of Perak which was pioneered by Lars Thomsen which is shown at the picture below being honored at a ceremony for the signing of the deal by Perak State Administrative Head Dato Samsuddin.
The novel compounds that we isolate can be functionalized on our nanoparticles giving enhanced properties compared to the native compound. Functionalization can enhance affinity by providing a structural surface at which the peptide can fold, reducing the compound from systemic to local and reduce toxicity.
